We are excited to announce that we were able to deliver yet another hardware project to the market! The Polidea team supported Internet of Things start-up Emberlight in bringing their app to the Android platform. Emberlight is based in San Francisco and makes a smart socket, allowing users to turn any bulb into a smart bulb. These bulbs can then be controlled via app, turned on and off from anywhere, both inside the home and halfway across the world, or coordinated and dimmed to create specific moods. The smart socket can communicate with the mobile app either directly via Bluetooth LE, or through the cloud using WiFi.
The biggest challenge of the project was the hardware integration. The iOS app uses a secure, elaborate comms protocol and we had to create an equivalent for Android. Additionally, we had to transfer the app’s design and information architecture to Android, create a native experience for the new user base and keep the unique look and feel of the iOS app.
As with any start-up, budgeting was a big concern. Together with the client we were able to define the scope in a way that allowed us to build a working, tested app over a period of three months. We provided a team of developers, designers and testers totalling six people who worked closely with Emberlight’s hardware experts. “Working with Polidea, we were able to deliver a great mobile experience to our Android customers, in time and on budget”, says Atif Noori, Cofounder and CEO of emberlight. At Polidea, we love hardware projects and have amassed solid experience in this field, so it was great fun getting involved with such a conscious and forward-thinking idea.
